Leonidas Stergiou to join VfB Stuttgart on loan

Sky Germany and Kicker report that VfB Stuttgart will bring in St Gallen defender Leonidas Stergiou on loan as they look to boost their defensive options.

Stergiou is set to join Stuttgart on a season-long loan with an option to buy but the 21-year-old will not be a replacement for Konstantinos Mavropanos who is on the verge of joining West Ham United in the Premier League. This likely means that Stuttgart will enter the transfer market once again to replace the Greek international.

Stuttgart are bringing in Stergiou as they view the central defender as a future prospect who has the potential to develop at the club. The 21-year-old’s contract at parent club St Gallen expires in 2024 so it is likely that he will not return to the Swiss side.

Despite the departure of Wataru Endo to Liverpool and the impending departure of Mavropanos, Stuttgart began their Bundesliga season in style beating Bochum 5-0 with two goals each from Sehrou Guirassy and Silas as well as a Dan-Axel Zagadou’s first goal for the club.
