Leon Goretzka is set to miss Der Klassiker in two weeks

Bayern Munich overcame Mainz on matchday eight to move within two points of league leaders Bayer Leverkusen. However, Thomas Tuchel did have to contend with another injury blow when Leon Goretzka was withdrawn halfway through the second half.

A duel with Mainz striker Ludovic Ajorque on the hour mark left the Bayern midfielder with pain in his left hand, but the physio team deemed him fit enough to continue playing. Nevertheless, Goretzka was substituted ten minutes later and then taken to hospital.

Having already completed surgery on Sunday afternoon, it is understood that the 28-year-old has a fracture in his left metacarpal. As reported by Bild, Goretzka is expected to be out for up to three weeks, meaning that he will likely miss Bayern’s next four games, including the clash against Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.

A bitter pill for Bayern to swallow, especially after the former Schalke midfielder picked up a goal and an assist on the weekend to inspire Bayern to three points. Despite being the latest player to be added to Bayern’s never-ending injury list, Goretzka would share a picture on Instagram with a positive caption concerning his return:

“Appropriate sign in front of the clinic. Thank you for the well wishes. I’m looking forward to being able to get back to it quickly.”
