Leeds United could consider Ao Tanaka as Nadiem Amiri’s alternative

As reported by Sky Germany, Leeds United have considered Fortuna Düsseldorf midfielder Ao Tanaka as a possible alternative to Nadiem Amiri.

Leeds have missed out on a move to sign Amiri from Bayer Leverkusen, despite the five-time German international flying to England to finalise the deal, due to Amiri deciding to remain in his homeland after not being impressed by the club’s offer. Nevertheless, this has not deterred Daniel Farke’s side in their hunt for midfield reinforcement.

However, while some reports had suggested that Tanaka was set to undergo a medical for the Yorkshire-based club, Sky Germany’s report has clarified that this is not the case. Leeds are considering a move for the 24-year-old, but they are not yet entirely convinced by the player.

Last season, Tanaka featured 25 times for Düsseldorf, scoring one goal and collecting three assists during an injury-plagued campaign.

If Leeds are to sign Tanaka, Düsseldorf will demand a lucrative sum in order to prize the 24-year-old away with little time to find a successor. Therefore, Leeds could begin to look elsewhere for cheaper alternatives with Werder Bremen midfielder Ilia Gruev looking likely to join the club for a reported €6m
