GGFN Advent Calendar | Day 13 – Germany’s New Hero

Welcome back to the Get German Football News advent calendar. As the countdown to Christmas continues, so does our festive fun on day thirteen, as we look into the man who has made the number 13 so famous and a player who could become the German National Team’s new hero, Pascal Groß.

After a stellar five seasons at Ingolstadt, where he would help guide the club into the Bundesliga, Groß signed for newly promoted Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 2017. Ever since then, the German playmaker has donned the number 13 shirt for the Seagulls, making it one of the most famous in the club’s history.

With 31 goals and 44 assists in 233 appearances, Groß has been able to become Brighton’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League. However, as well as this, he has overseen the club go from relegation candidates to Europa League favourites in just a six-year time frame, proving how important he has been along their journey.

Nevertheless, during his time in England, despite being one of the league’s most consistent performers, he has been unable to receive the recognition he deserves on the international stage. That was up until the beginning of this season, when Hansi Flick offered the 32-year-old his international bow.

In his four appearances for the German National Team, Groß has displayed his quality and dependability, stepping up to the plate when others failed to do so. With Euro 2024 fast approaching, it is expected that Groß will be part of Julian Nagelsmann’s squad, where he could become the new hero in Germany’s midfield.

As Groß finally starts to get the plaudits that he deserves domestically and internationally, earning interest from Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt along the way, it is fair to say that he is a worthy inclusion on day thirteen.
