GGFN Advent Calendar | Day 1

As the Christmas holidays get under way, we at Get German Football News want to spread the festive feeling with our very own advent calendar. Looking back through the German football archives, we will be sharing a fact each day in the build-up to Christmas that correlates with that day’s specific number.

Therefore, hiding behind day one is the one time the DFB-Pokal has been held in the same city as the two finalists. Before a rule change in the 1984–85 season that stated that the Pokal final would be contested in Berlin every season at the Olympiastadion, the tournament’s showpiece event took place in a different city in Germany every year.

However, only once was the DFB-Pokal held in the same city as the two finalists, and this took place in 1983 between FC Köln and Fortuna Köln. On the 11th of June, in a packed-out Müngersdorfer Stadium – the home of FC Köln – one of German football’s greatest oddities unfolded.

For FC Köln, making it to the final was nothing out of the ordinary, as this resembled their sixth appearance at this stage of the tournament in twelve years. However, for Fortuna Köln, this was a remarkable accomplishment. Having only been able to grace the Bundesliga for a single season during the 1973/74 campaign, this was also the club’s first, and to this day only, DFB-Pokal final appearance.

Nevertheless, on the day, it was Fortuna who dominated proceedings in the local derby. Despite having numerous chances to take the lead, they would fail to find the killer blow, and Köln would take full advantage. A late Pierre Littbarski strike earned the Billygoats their fourth and final DFB-Pokal title in an all-Cologne affair.

A truly historic and rare day in German football history, it is unlikely that this feat will ever be managed again with the cup final’s permanent residency being in the capital. However, could a Hertha Berlin vs Union Berlin final be a future possibility?
