Donyell Malen could leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer

Donyell Malen may leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer if his current lack of football continues, reports Ruhr Nachrichten.

The 24-year-old has only played 19 minutes since starting in Dortmund’s game against Mainz in January. Malen has failed to impress in attack and also lacks the necessary defensive attitude for Dortmund. Edin Terzic has repeatedly given Malen opportunities but he has failed to make use of them.

Malen joined Dortmund in 2021 from PSV for €30m and has struggled to make an impact during that time, scoring 10 goals in 58 appearances. The attacker was seen as a replacement for the departed Jadon Sancho, but the expectations for the Dutch international were probably set too high.

Since the return of Sébastien Haller and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens as well as the upturn in form in Karim Adeyemi, Julian Brandt and Giovanni Reyna, Malen has seen himself pushed further down the pecking order and with Terzic opting for other options in their wins against Werder Bremen in the league and Bochum in the DFB-Pokal, the Dutchman’s situation is unlikely to change any time soon.
