Dayot Upamecano: “I demand of myself that I never ease off.”

Speaking in an interview with Bayern Munich’s official channels, Dayot Upamecano discussed his World Cup campaign, his experience and being runners-up with France.

“Although I was obviously very disappointed that we missed out on the title so narrowly at the end, the World Cup overall was a very valuable experience for me, which brought me further in my development,” said Upamecano.

“As an elite sportsman I’m always looking forward and now giving everything for my club again. I’ve always been the battling type and I demand of myself that I never ease off. We have big ambitions together here at Bayern – and I obviously want to achieve everything too.”

After joining Bayern Munich from RB Leipzig for just shy of €45m in July 2021, Upamecano received plenty of criticism and there had been doubts as to whether the Frenchman was worth the fee that the Rekordmeister had splashed out on.

Fast forward to 2023, Upamecano has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga. The 24-year-old has a contract with Bayern Munich until 2026 and has featured in all but one Bundesliga games for Julian Nagelsmann this season.

Bayern Munich face a challenge to retain their Bundesliga title this season. Nagelsmann’s side are just one point clear of Union Berlin and three clear of Borussia Dortmund.

A Champions League win is also crucial for club bosses, they play PSG on Tuesday night.
