The Bundesliga representatives in the Champions League this season have found out who their opponents are in this season’s group stage.
Bayern Munich were in Pot 1, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig were in Pot 2 and in their first-ever season in the Champions League, Union Berlin were in Pot 4.
Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Copenhagen, Galatasaray
Bayern Munich will be looking to finish first in the group with their only likely challenge to the top sport being Manchester United. In last year’s group stage, Bayern went unbeaten under Julian Nagelsmann only conceding two goals against Viktoria Plzen.
Napoli, Real Madrid, Braga, Union Berlin
In their first-ever campaign in the Champions League, Union Berlin will relish the opportunity to play at the Bernabéu, while they will also welcome the opportunity to welcome Real Madrid to the Stadion An der Alten Försterei where the atmosphere will be louder than ever before. Union will likely aim to finish at least third in the group ahead of Braga who they faced in last season’s Europa League group stage.
Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, Newcastle United
By far the hardest group in this season’s Champions League, Borussia Dortmund may have their work cut out. In their opening games of the season they have been poor and struggled against 1.FC Köln and Bochum. If they fail to improve by the opening matchday, then Dortmund will likely be punished by the stronger teams in Barcelona and AC Milan.
Manchester City, RB Leipzig, Crvena Zvezda, Young Boys
RB Leipzig are expected to comfortably finish second in Group G. They face Manchester City once again, a team that they drew 1-1 with at home in the first leg of the round of 16 last season before being thrashed 7-0 in Manchester. Crvena Zvezda and Young Boys are unlikely to pose a threat to Leipzig’s second place unless the German side suffers a slip-up in the group stages.
