Borussia Dortmund pull out of signing Edson Álvarez

Borussia Dortmund’s move to sign Ajax midfielder Edson Álvarez (25) has collapsed, according to Mike Verweij, despite the Bundesliga club reaching a verbal agreement with the player.

Sebastian Kehl had been working on a deal to bring Álvarez to the club and negotiations had been ongoing with Ajax. Dortmund submitted a €30m offer to sign Álvarez but were unwilling to meet Ajax’s valuation of the player, with Patrick Berger adding that the player would have been too expensive for BVB in the end.

With developments surrounding Emre Can who is expected to sign a new contract by a further two-or-three years, it would appear that Edin Terzic will go into the 2023/24 campaign with the 29-year-old as their defensive midfielder.

Borussia Dortmund continue to work on a deal to sign Wolfsburg’s Felix Nmecha (22), who offers a different profile to Álvarez. Another midfield option that BVB have considered this summer is Lecce’s Morten Hjulmand.
