Adi Hütter speaks on his time at Borussia Mönchengladbach

In his press conference for his unveiling as AS Monaco manager, Adi Hütter gave an insight into his time at Borussia Mönchengladbach and why left.

On his previous managerial job, Hütter said: “I had a contract in Frankfurt and Marco Rose left the club so they had to search for a new coach and I had meetings with Max Eberl, and I left Frankfurt to go to Borussia Mönchengladbach, he promised me a lot, for the squad, for the goals, for the future, then he left after three months because he was sick, it was not so easy. Then we had big issues, the style of play, and how we want to play football at Gladbach was not the same idea of what the players had to our style of football. We played boring football because we always played ball possession in our own half, it was not the right way and we wanted to change the players but the new sporting director had another idea. So it was best that we finished the contract.”

Hütter’s comments give insight into the situation at Gladbach as the club has lacked stability since Rose left for Dortmund, which ultimately has caused a domino effect that is still in motion now.

Before taking over Gladbach, Hütter led Frankfurt to the Europa League. His successor, Oliver Glasner, would go on to lead the Frankfurt team to a Europa League triumph. The furthest Hütter had led Frankfurt in Europe was a semi-final defeat to Chelsea in the Europa League.

Hütter joined Gladbach in 2021 to replace Marco Rose who had agreed to join Borussia Dortmund. During his season in charge at the club, Hütter averaged 1.38 ppg as the team finished 10th in the league. The only stand-out performance during his time at Gladbach was in the DFB-Pokal when die Fohlen beat Bayern Munich 5-0. They would then be knocked out in the next round with a 3-0 loss to 2.Bundesliga side Hannover 96.

Gladbach replaced Hütter with Daniel Farke, who also finished 10th in the league and was ultimately sacked at the end of the season and has now been replaced by former Bayer Leverkusen manager Gerardo Seoane.
