Xabi Alonso on Bayer Leverkusen’s 5-1 defeat: “There are no excuses.”

Speaking after Bayer Leverkusen’s humiliating 5-1 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, Xabi Alonso summarised his team’s performance which currently sees B04 down in 16th after 10 games.

“We had a lot of problems and lacked the necessary intensity from the start. There are no excuses, everything is our responsibility,” said Alonso. “Now we have to believe and show we can do much better. It’s all down to us.”

Midfielder Robert Andrich added: “We have to be honest to ourselves and we can’t think that it’s all going well and we’ll pick up points sometime soon. Everybody has to know the time has come. We definitely have to get a home win against Wolfsburg on Saturday.”

Sitting in the relegation playoff, Bayer Leverkusen held their own until stoppage time in the first-half, before Daichi Kamada netted from the spot. Randal Kolo Muani and Jesper Lindstrom then added a second and third for Oliver Glasner’s side, Kamada scored a second from the spot before Lucas Alario scored SGE’s fifth after 86 minutes.

Piero Hincapié did score for Bayer Leverkusen after 56 minutes, but was shown a straight red card 15 minutes later. The Ecuadorian will be a huge loss for Bayer Leverkusen over their next Bundesliga games.
