Wolfsburg want to strengthen defence and midfield, Florian Grillitsch not an option

As Wolfsburg search the market for a replacement for Xaver Schlager, Florian Grillitsch is only a thought at the minute with the Austria international preferring to play abroad, according to Kicker.

Schlager joined RB Leipzig on Friday for €12m, ending this three-year stay in Wolfsburg. That means Jörg Schmadtke and Marcel Schäfer are tasked with finding a replacement, but on a budget.

Max Arnold will be a mainstay in the midfield but the loss of Schlager will be obvious. One of Yannick Gerhardt or returnee Josuha Guilavogui can play alongside the German, whilst Ridle Baku is versatile and can also play in central-midfield.

Schlager was entering the final year of his contract at Wolfsburg and was unwilling to sign a contract extension and so they were forced to sell the 24-year-old with a need for strengthening central-defence and central-midfield, rather than losing Schlager on a free transfer in 2023.

Wolfsburg are in advanced talks to sign Mattia Viti from Empoli.
