Schalke sign Niklas Tauer ahead of a busy January

Speaking to WAZ, Schalke’s director of sport Peter Knäbel spoke about their plans for this coming winter transfer window.

Schalke has already announced the signing of Niklas Tauer from Mainz 05 on loan, but Knäbel has his sights set on other players including Tim Starke of Union Berlin, however as Knäbel mentions, it has not been easy: “We haggle. Everyone looks for the best solution for their club. We do not yet agree.” The likely outcome is a loan move, with only the loan fee needing to be discussed.

There will also be outgoings with Nassim Boujellab one player that is likely to leave. The midfielder is currently on loan at HJK Helsinki and will return at the end of the year. On the issue, Knäbel said: “We are striving for a solution with the player. But we have not finally completed the discussions.”

Finally, there will be a new contract for Soichiro Kozuki who has impressed for Schalke II in the Regionalliga West.

Schalke currently find themselves four points adrift at the bottom of the Bundesliga with only two wins all season, whilst also being on their second coach in Thomas Reis. Schalke restarts their season against an inform Eintracht Frankfurt team on January 21st.
