Marc-André ter Stegen to start in goal for Germany while captaincy remains a mystery

Ahead of their Nations League clash with Hungary, Germany head coach Hansi Flick has announced that Marc-André ter Stegen will play in goal while the armband is still up for grabs, as per a report from Kicker

During a press conference, the 57-year-old coach explained that Barcelona’s number one will take the place of Manuel Neuer who is missing along with Leon Goretzka due to covid. Both Neuer and ter Stegen will almost certainly be on the plane to Qatar but this might just give the Barcelona man the opportunity he needs to become Germany’s new number one. This is a difficult task with Neuer being the team’s captain but if Flick picks his starting 11 on form next month, ter Stegen might just be in luck.

In terms of who will lead Germany as captain in the next two games, it remains a mystery. However, if you go by most international appearances then Thomas Müller will captain the side should he be in the starting 11.

Germany will host Hungary on Friday before heading to Wembley to face England on Monday evening. This will be the final big test before Hansi Flick’s men kickstart their World Cup campaign against Japan on November 23rd.
