Edimilson Fernandes signs contract extension until 2026 at Mainz 05

Edimilson Fernandes has extended his contract at Mainz 05 until 2026. The defensive-midfielder has only found himself in the starting eleven this season and has previously been on loan at Arminia Bielefeld and Young Boys until breaking into Bo Svensson’s team.

“I am very happy about my contract extension in Mainz. Especially given how  the last few years have gone, I am over the moon to see the coach put his trust in me once more. It is also thanks to Bo Svensson that I’ve been named as part of the Switzerland squad for Qatar,” said Fernandes. At the end of the day, I want to be on the pitch and playing my football, so this contract extension ahead of the World Cup was the logical and best decision for me.”

Due to his form this season, Fernandes will be going to Qatar but the options in front of him in defence as well as in midfield are very strong so it will be difficult for the former West Ham player to make himself a starter. Some of the players standing in his way include Nico Elvedi of Borussia Mönchengladbach, Manuel Akanji of Manchester City and Fabian Schar of Newcastle United all of them in great form this season. While in midfield there is the likes of Denis Zaharia of Chelsea, Remo Freuler of Nottingham Forest and Granit Xhaka of Arsenal for Fernandes to displace.

This season, Fernandes has played 13 games for Mainz and has assisted once. Out of those games he has started nine and started for Mainz in their 1-1 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.
