Christian Streich on Vincenzo Grifo’s omission from the Italy squad: “He’s not bitter.”

After missing out on being called up the Italy national team, Vincenzo Grifo will instead play against 2. Bundesliga side Heidenheim in a friendly. Freiburg head coach Christian Streich commented on his star player being left out.

“You’re more in focus there because it’s on TV and have more sports newspapers, and daily sports newspapers like Gazzetta,” said Streich. “Vince is a bit disappointed but he’s not bitter. He’s so mature now and so experienced. He thinks that it’s a shame but he knows full well that his performances at the club can open the door again for [Roberto] Mancini to invite him.”

Grifo, 28, has scored seven and created seven in 27 Bundesliga games for Freiburg this season.
