Christian Streich: “Being a finalist is something special.”

Speaking ahead of Freiburg’s first DFB Pokal final, head coach Christian Streich commented on the development of Breisgau-Brasilianer in recent seasons and potentially winning the competition.

“Freiburg has such a long history and it’s impossible to say whether this is the biggest game in the club’s history,” said Streich. “Being a finalist is something really special. I can still remember how travelling to this city full of history felt with the U19s but at the same time, it’s just one game of football.”

Freiburg’s last trophy came in 2016, when they lifted the 2. Bundesliga. Streich added: “We haven’t done a lot wrong in the past 30 years at our club. We have the advantage of being away from the spotlight. There isn’t often a lot of attention on us or chaos. We’ve worked hard and have always wanted to do what’s best for our club. It would be really nice if we won the cip. If we don’t, it’s not the end of the world.”

Freiburg beat Hamburg 3-1 in the DFB Pokal semi-final but beat fellow Bundesliga teams Hoffenheim and Bochum to reach the 2022 German Cup final.
