Christian Günter: “I will never forget the moment that Hansi Flick called me up.”

During a press conference on Tuesday, Christian Günter has spoken about being at the World Cup, his overall career, and his goals for the tournament. Günter has performed well in the SC Freiburg defence this season and has certainly earned a call-up to the national team in time for the Qatar World Cup.

What was it like receiving the call-up and knowing you’re going to the World Cup?

“Being here at the World Cup is very emotional for me. As a footballer, there’s nothing bigger than playing for your country at a World Cup. I will never forget the moment that Hansi Flick called me up.”

Of course, Germany will be aiming to win the World Cup. However, what are your personal goals at the tournament?

“Naturally, I want to be playing, that goes without saying. But no matter what role Hansi Flick sees for me: I will give everything in training, offer my all and fill out that role with energy.”

Could you ever dream of playing for your country at a World Cup?

“I definitely wouldn’t have guessed it when I was playing for the U17s. I’ve worked very, very hard for everything.”

Günter may not be a starter for Germany’s first game but tournaments can change any second if players pick up injuries. The Freiburg defender understands he can be called upon at any moment. This could be the case if Germany are successful in getting out of the groups and into the knockout stages.

Germany will play Japan on November 23 before games against Spain and Costa Rica in Group E.
