Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano: “I feel better than last season.”

Speaking after Bayern Munich’s 2-0 win against Wolfsburg, central-defender Dayot Upamecano reflected on his impressive early season form and competition within the team.

“I worked a lot with an athletic trainer on vacation,” said Upamecano, via TZ. “I feel better than last season. We have a lot of competition, but that’s better for us. I just want to play and keep going.”

Alongside Julian Nagelsmann, Upamecano arrived at Bayern Munich last summer from RB Leipzig for €42.5m. Although playing 38 games across all competitions in his maiden season at Bayern, the Frenchman struggled for consistency and received criticism.

Upamecano has started all three games for Bayern Munich this season, even after the arrival of Matthijs de Ligt, and has impressed. The France international was awarded an 8/10 by GGFN for his performance against Wolfsburg on Sunday: “One of the Frenchman’s better games in a Bayern Munich top. Solid, strong in the air and excellent at progressing the ball out of defence. Strong performance.”
