Bayern Munich in contact with the Senegalese FA over Sadio Mané

Bayern Munich announced on Wednesday that Sadio Mané suffered an injury to the head of his right fibula in their 6-1 win against Werder Bremen on Tuesday night. L’Équipe reported that Africa’s Football of the Year would miss the World Cup after he was withdrawn after just 20 minutes on the penultimate matchday of the Bundesliga prior to the tournament.

But whether Mané will actually miss the World Cup or not remains unclear. He will miss the game against Schalke but in a statement, Bayern said that they will conduct further examinations in the next days and that they remain in contact with the Senegalese FA. Considered one of Senegal’s greatest ever players, this should give the nation some hope that he could yet make the squad, which will be announced on Friday.

Bayern captain Manuel Neuer expressed his sympathies for Mané, saying: “Of course I’m sorry. It’s annoying when a player gets injured in general or just before the World Cup.”

Neuer himself had doubts over whether he would make Hansi Flick’s World Cup squad after he missed eight consecutive Bayern games with a shoulder injury before returning against Hertha Berlin at the weekend.
