In an interview with Bild, Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes (40) spoke about the recent appointment of Xabi Alonso and how he believes he is the right man for the job.
It’s been a difficult start to the season for Bayer Leverkusen who are currently fighting a relegation battle. After the sacking of Gerardo Seoane earlier this season, Bayer had to get their next appointment right. Rolfes and his colleagues have entrusted ex-Bayern Munich player and Spanish international Alonso with the tough task ahead.
When asked if Alonso was the right man for the job, Rolfes didn’t mix up his words: “Believe me – Xabi has enormous power. You can see that in coaching on the line, but above all in every training session. He is the man who will bring the fire back to us.”
Despite winning his first game in charge against fellow strugglers Schalke, Alonso has been dealt two tough defeats in the Champions League and Bundesliga. Following the 5-1 hammering against Eintracht Frankfurt, Rolfes was asked if the players understood the serious situation that hangs over the club.
“It’s obvious that everyone is fighting with themselves at the moment. But right now it’s very important that everyone helps the team. If the team is good, each individual plays better again. That made us strong, especially in the second half of last season. We need this will again.”
Leverkusen face another massive test on the weekend as they face Wolfsburg who themselves have struggled for form so far. It’s a massive test for both the club and Alonso. Only time will tell if he truly is the man for the job.
