Bundesliga side Mainz 05 have today confirmed the signing of 28-year-old Switzerland international Silvan Widmer from Basel for a reported fee of €2.5m.
The right-sided defender has signed a three-year contract until 2024 with Mainz and will fill a defensive gap that the departure of Danny da Costa has left.
“Silvan is an athletic type of player who has everything we need,” said head coach Bo Svensson. “He can be used in several defensive systems, has a lot of speed and gets forward. Silvan is a great fit for the way we want to play football.”
Widmer played 117 games in all competitions for Basel.
