Borussia Dortmund will not sign a replacement for Axel Witsel

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has confirmed that the Bundesliga side will not sign a replacement for Axel Witsel in January after the Belgian tore his achilles tendon against RB Leipzig on Saturday.

“We will fill this void with our own personnel,” Zorc told Sport1. “Emre [Can] did very well after stepping in as a one-to-one replacement for Axel and Jude [Bellingham] will be back from injury next week. We are not worried about this situation.”

Borussia Dortmund confirmed on Sunday afternoon that Witsel would miss several months and will undergo a surgery, which could see him miss the European Championship in the summer.

As well as both Can and Bellingham, Borussia Dortmund have suitable replacements in Mahmoud Dahoud and Julian Brandt, the latter whom has been linked with a move to Arsenal.

Witsel is ever present in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund this season, playing 90 minutes in eight of his last nine league games.
