Borussia Dortmund head coach Lucien Favre has confirmed that central defender Mats Hummels is out of Wednesday’s Champions League clash vs RB Salzburg.
“Unfortunately Mats Hummels will not be available tomorrow. We are hoping that he’ll be fully fit for Saturday [vs Bayern Munich],” said Favre in his pre-match press conference.
“We only have one fit central defender who is used to playing in back four, so we’ll have to see how we set up defensively tomorrow.”
Borussia Dortmund have three points from a possible six in their two Champions League fixtures. The Bundesliga side struggled away to Lazio, losing 3-1 and despite a poor performance vs Zenit St. Petersburg, managed to grind out a 2-0 win late in the game.
With just one central defender fit enough to play, we could see Favre revert back to a three-man defence which could include Łukasz Piszczek and midfielder Thomas Delaney alongside Manuel Akanji.
