Loris Karius on Jürgen Klopp: “His success speaks for itself, he is currently one of best coaches in the world.”

Speaking exclusively to Kicker, 27-year-old German goalkeeper Loris Karius has discussed his decision to join Union Berlin, working with Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp and the 2018 Champions League final vs Real Madrid.

“That was two years ago,” said Karius. “I have played over 60 games since then. I came here to perform well. Of course, I was away from Germany for a long time but that doesn’t really matter now. The only ones who want to talk about [his mistakes] are the journalists.”

Karius joined Premier League side Liverpool from Mainz in 2016 and has worked under Klopp: “It was always fair and honest, he always tells you what the situation is like.

“We always had a good relationship and never had a problem. His success speaks for itself, he is currently one of best coaches in the world.”

His decision to join Union Berlin was completely a sporting decision: “Being able to achieve something with Union, with a team that is young and hungry and in a situation similar to the one I know from Mainz, that convinced and attracted me.

“I think we have a good chance of staying in the league. We have strengthened ourselves well. We play good football and we’re on the right path.”
