Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke backs Lucien Favre

Speaking at the club’s AGM, Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke discussed the future of head coach Lucien Favre, whose contract will expire at the end of the season.

“I want to take a stand for Lucien Favre,” said Watzke. “He came in 2018 after a great upheaval and has finished second twice. Both times we played very well in the league. To judge the coach only by whether he’s won a championship it too narrow-minded.

“We will sit down together in January or February and see how things go from there. But there is no decision yet. We are quite relaxed about these talks.”

Since his appointment in 2018, the 63-year-old only has a the DFL Supercup to his name and has finished runners-up to Bayern Munich in both his seasons in charge of the Bundesliga club.

Talks are expected to resume in the new year and a contract extension beyond the 2020/21 season could be on the cards. However, several fans have showed their discontent towards the Swiss tactician.
