Niko Kovač: “Large investments will be implemented this summer.”

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sport Bild, Bayern Munich head coach Niko Kovač discussed squad planning heading into the 2019/20 season, his form against big clubs and his tactical variations.

Kovač on Bayern Munich’s transfer plans:

“We haven’t had a squad upheaval yet. Large investments will be implemented this summer. Hasan Salihamidžić came one-and-a-half years ago, I came last year. How much money did Bayern spend this season? Only €10 million on Alphonso Davies. You have to be fair and remain analytical. Uli Hoeneß said there are big players who marked the club and they should be given a proper farewell. That’s why I didn’t make big demands. Next season, things will be different.”

Kovač on Kai Havertz:

“He is an absolute talent, a great player who sooner or later will leave Bayer Leverkusen. He will be a big star, there’s no doubt about that.”

Kovač on not beating Borussia Dortmund, Ajax or Liverpool:

“It has to with their quality which was very high. In Dortmund we were close in the first half. Away to Ajax, we should have won and vs Liverpool we didn’t have a good performance.”

Kovač on his tactics at Bayern Munich:

“When I came to Munich, there was already a system started by Louis van Gaal and modified by Pep Guardiola. The players feel comfortable in this system, so there is no need to make big changes. Just because I did not change the system, it doesn’t mean I can’t do it.”

Kovač on his future at the Bundesliga club:

“Uli Hoeneß said he would be okay with missing out on the league, so it wouldn’t be the end of the world if we don’t win. But we are athletes, we fought and got back from nine points behind. Nobody believed but we came back.”
