Writing for his Sky Germany column, former Germany and Bayern Munich midfielder Lothar Matthäus believes Alexander Nübel should join the Bundesliga champions immediately rather than wait until the summer.
Nübel has reportedly agreed a five-year deal with Bayern Munich whilst Schalke have confirmed that their captain will leave the club in the summer on a free transfer.
“Nübel has no future at Schalke because he will have to deal with a lot of criticism,” wrote Matthäus. “David Wagner can’t afford to accept his own captain being whistled at every game and jeprodise his team’s performance.
“If he had moved to Barcelona, Madrid or Manchester to be the first choice goalkeeper, the fans would have understood his decision. The best thing for Nübel and all concerned would be for him to move to Munich in the winter,” added Matthäus.
