Xabi Alonso could retire from football in the summer

Bayern Munich midfielder and former Spain international Xabi Alonso has reportidly told Carlo Ancelotti that he will retire from football in the summer, according to Sportbild.

The 35-year-old will see out his contract, which expires in June 2017, after joining the Bundesliga champions in 2014. If this report is true, it’s fair to say that Alonso has had a successful spell in Germany, where he’s played predominantly Pep Guardiola.

Alonso has played 18 games in all competitions this season, scoring three goals.

The report also suggested that Ancelotti does not want Alonso retire just yet, as he can still serve a purpose to Bayern Munich.
