Kicker reports that relegation-threatened Wolfsburg are considering hiring Dieter Hecking to help them avoid the drop. An embarrassing 4-0 defeat against Stuttgart on Sunday leaves current head coach Daniel Bauer on thin ice. Wolfsburg didn’t respond to Bauer’s call-to-action following last week’s Bundesliga defeat against Augsburg. The only Wolfsburg professional to pick up a yellow card in the latest match was Bauer himself.
Wolfsburg running low on options
Having already sacked head coach Paul Simonis and sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz this season, Wolfsburg earnestly wished to avoid any more upheaval. As an alternative to two coaching changes in a single season, it’s been widely reported that the Lower Saxon Autostädter were considering moving newly appointed sporting director Pirmin Schwegler to the bench.
With only ten matchdays remaining, however, Germany’s green company team may have to employ something more drastic. Sunday’s Bundesliga loss keeps Wolfsburg in the second automatic relegation spot. The German Wolves sit two points below the relegation playoff place and three points adrift of outright safety thanks to weekend wins from St. Pauli and Werder Bremen.
Dieter Hecking available for return
Speaking to German broadcaster DAZN prior to kickoff on Sunday, Schwegler confirmed reports that Wolfsburg are not at all interested in bringing back head coach Felix Magath. Kicker nevertheless notes that Wolfsburg are interested in bringing back a separate former coach. Hecking coached the VWers from December 2012 to October 2016.
During his 165-match tenure, Hecking helped Wolfsburg capture both the DFB Pokal and the DFL Super Cup in 2015. Most recently, however, he was unable to keep Bochum from escaping relegation during the 2024/25 Bundesliga campaign. Hecking remained with Bochum in the 2. Bundesliga this year, before being sacked five games into the season.
