Mainz professionals remain in awe of Paul Nebel as the 23-year-old’s red hot run of form continues. Nebel scored both goals in Mainz’s Bundesliga victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday afternoon. After scoring in last weekend’s away win at Bremen and picking up an assist during Thursday’s historic Conference League victory, Nebel has now picked up four scorer points in the span of one short week.
Paul Nebel has answered the call
When Mainz’s talismanic de-facto captain Nadiem Amiri succumbed to injury nearly a month ago, Nebel was specifically tapped as the Mainz player who needed to step up his game in Amiri’s absence. Mainz head coach Urs Fischer didn’t necessarily take it easy on Nebel either, pulling no punches whenever it came time to assess some of Nebel’s more mediocre performances.
Nebel is nevertheless on firm footing now. After being dropped from the starting lineup and hit with a hard disciplinary ban from the DFB earlier this season, the attacking midfielder has dazzled in his last four consecutive Bundesliga starts. The Bad-Neuheim native has gone the full 90 minutes on all occasions, scoring two goals and registering two assists. The latest brace featured two lovely finishes.
Mainz praise Paul Nebel
“He deserves it,” Mainz’s official captain Silvan Widmer noted in the mixed zone. “He fought his way out of a tough stretch and has been delivering incredible performances for weeks now.“
“He hasn’t had an easy time, but has stuck with it and is now being rewarded.” Fischer told DAZN in his post match interview. “I’m genuinely happy for him.“
Paul Nebel on his form run
“The most important thing is that we won,” Nebel told journalists in the mixed zone. “The thing is to not let yourself get down, don’t slack off in training, work hard every day and keep at it.When things don’t go your way on the field or you’re not playing much, you just need to be prepared,”
“Even though I was very unhappy for a few weeks and things weren’t going my way, I managed to pull it off,” Nebel continued. “And I’m very happy about that.“
