Bayer Leverkusen head coach confirms Jonas Omlin and Janis Blaswich will compete for No. 1 keeper role

Following the acquisition of Borussia Mönchengladbach keeper Jonas Omlin on loan, Bayer Leverkusen head coach Kasper Hjulmand has immediately declared the Leverkusen goalkeeping race open. Leverkusen have immediately registered Omlin for the Champions League. Hjulmand spoke on his new keeper at a UCL pre-match press conference.

Hjulmand ready to give Omlin a chance at Leverkusen

It would be a problem if he said, ‘I’m here not to play,’” Hjulmand said of Omlin at the Tuesday press conference. “We also have great confidence in Janis [Blawich], and now we have another goalkeeper who is in this competition. We’ll see what happens, but it is competition. Janis will play [against Villarreal] tomorrow, and then we’ll see.”

Omlin eager to play again

After officially losing both his No. 1 slot and the Gladbach captaincy just prior to the start of this season, Omlin naturally remains enthused to be moving to a different club. Omlin didn’t shy away from stating his ambitions in a public relations interview published on Leverkusen’s club channels.

I haven’t had much playing time in recent months and I really hope that I can prove myself here and play for Leverkusen,” Omlin Said. “I will do everything I can to make the coach’s decision as difficult as possible. I’m looking forward to taking on this challenge.

My first match [after arriving in Gladbach] was to play for Leverkusen,” Omlin continued. “And now I get to play for Leverkusen myself. I already live in Düsseldorf, so I don’t have to do anything much other than take a different [Autobahn] exit [on my way to work].
