USMNT international James Sands will once again be unavailable for his Bundesliga club long-term. The St. Pauli professional underwent season-ending surgery slightly earlier during the 2024/25 Bundesliga campaign. This time, an ankle injury incurred in last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt forces the 25-year-old under the knife.
How influential has James Sands been this season?
Despite the fact that he missed the final three months of the season last year, St. Pauli remained sufficiently impressed with the 14-times-capped USMNT international to the point that they opted to extend his New York City FC loan deal this past summer. Sands has remained largely healthy this season and featured in 24 of St. Pauli’s 25 league fixtures prior to his latest injury.
Hamburg’s Kiezkicker gave no specific timeline for Sands’ return, but – with only nine rounds of play remaining this season – one assumes that the New York native’s prospects for returning this year are very bleak. Sands’ World Cup prospects were already virtually non-existent. Sands earned just one USMNT cap in the 2025 calendar year and was last called up by Mauricio Pochettino in October.
