Official | Elversberg conclude record purchase of striker David Mokwa (21), Hoffenheim secure buyback option

SV Elversberg have reacted to the loss of 2. Bundesliga leading goal-scorer Younes Ebnoutalib with a record-setting purchase of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim attacker David Mokwa. The Saarland outfit – per multiple German footballing media sources – have paid €2m plus bonuses to secure the France U19 international’s services. Mokwa thus counts as Elversberg’s most expensive addition ever.

Hoffenheim have also hedged their bets on the striker, building a buyback option into the deal. The Sinsheimers made sure to confirm the existence of the option in a statement released on their own website. Mokwa (21) is currently valued at only €1m, but has already made four TSG first team appearances. Last season, Mokwa scored in both his Europa League appearances against Tottenham and Anderlecht.

Why there has been a buzz around David Mokwa?

In addition to the two above-mentioned UEL goals, Mokwa is among the Hoffenheim reserve players who have made important contributions to the success of TSG II. Mokwa, more so than any other player, helped the Hoffenheim reserves earn promotion from the fourth division to the 3. Liga last year. The French-born talent netted an amazing 20 Regionalliga goals in 32 appearances during the 2024/25 campaign.

This year, Mokwa has been oscillating quite a bit between the Hoffenheim senior team and the reserves. As a result, he hasn’t been anywhere near as prolific as his former teammate and new Eintracht Frankfurt signing Ayoube Amaimouni-Echghouyab. Unlike fellow former teammate and new Heidenheim signing Hennes Behrens, it didn’t appear as if Mokwa possessed prospects to play in the German top flight.

Mokwa still managed to score three goals in eight appearances for his 3. Liga outfit this year. He made TSG head coach Christian Ilzer’s Bundesliga matchday selection on three occasions, though Ilzer ultimately opted not to deploy him in important fixtures against Bayern Munich, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Bayer Leverkusen.

Words on Mokwa’s switch?

Moving Mokwa to a better developmental locale constituted a top priority for Hoffenheim during the current January transfer window. A loan deal seemed the more likely option until Elversberg came calling with a purchase offer. TSG sporting director Andreas Schicker nevertheless emphasized that the Kraichgauer would be keeping close tabs on their prospect and wouldn’t hesitate to exercise their buyback option.

David has developed very positively in our academy over the past few years and has also shown his great potential in the professional arena,” Schicker noted in a club statement. “We will continue to monitor his progress closely.

David brings many qualities that we want to see in our attacking play,” SVE sporting director Ole Book added. “He is creative, dynamic, and a proven team player. He has already proven his potential several times in his still young career. We look forward to continuing this journey together in Elversberg.

This is a very exciting new task,” the player himself added. “In recent years, the club has not only attracted attention for its sporting achievements, but also stands for an active, offensive style of play that I really like.”
