Chelsea opt to recall defender Aarón Anselmino from Borussia Dortmund loan stint early

David Ornstein reports that Chelsea FC have decided to invoke the special clause in centre back Aarón Anselmino’s Borussia Dortmund loan agreement. Anselmino’s Bundesliga club is in for quite the shock as – for most of the past month – this move was considered unlikely.

Borussia Dortmund must absorb the shock Chelsea reversal

The surprise news does at least come at a halfway decent time for die Schwarzgelben. Two BVB centre-backs scored in this weekend’s 0-3 away win over Union Berlin. Nico Schlotterbeck – finally allowed to partake in set-pieces again by head coach Niko Kovac after his long recovery process from injury – scored off a corner and is once again optimistic about his prospects with Dortmund.

Skipper Emré Can also appears fit following his long struggles with injury this season. The BVB captain has scored from the penalty spot in two consecutive matches and appears both engaged and invested in Dortmund’s Bundesliga campaign.

Will Dortmund look to the transfer market?

This actually seems unlikely. Despite the fact that Niklas Süle is hampered by back problems, Dortmund still have Schlotterbeck, Can, and Waldemar Anton available to work in head coach Niko Kovac’s back-three. Ramy Bensebaini – a natural left back – has also proved highly effective working as a central defender under Kovac.

Dortmund are known not to wish to make a major splurge on the transfer market this month.
