Following the completion of the Champions League league phase, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund have found out their opponents in the playoff round.
Both finished in the 9th to 24th positions, meaning they would have to play an extra round before progressing to the round of 16.
Because of their finishing positions, Leverkusen and Dortmund were drawn on the same side, meaning they could have played each other. However, this scenario was avoided as Nik Kovac’s side will play Atalanta, while die Werkself will return to Greece to face Olympiakos, whom they lost to earlier in the league phase.
It is also now guaranteed that one of them will face Bayern Munich if they progress to the round of 16, while the other will play Arsenal.
