Sky Germany – as relayed by transfermarkt.de – reports that Austrian striker Michael Gregoritsch is nearing a Bundesliga return. The German broadcaster claims that Gregoritsch is presently in advanced negotiations to join a German top flight club. Sky does not specify which Bundesliga club the 31-year-old is set to join.
Gregoritsch wants to return to the Bundesliga
The 72-times-capped Austrian international only recently bid the Bundesliga farewell when he moved from Freiburg to Copenhagen’s Brøndby IF this past summer. It appeared as if Gregoritsch’s 13 years of long service in three separate tiers of German football was over. Gregoritsch has performed well enough in the Danish SuperLiga, but is reportedly disappointed that his new club hasn’t qualified for Europe.
Ahead of this summer’s forthcoming World Cup, Gregoritsch evidently seeks to return to his old stomping grounds in order to better focus on serving his country. Prior to moving north this summer, Gregoritsch was reliably linked with potential transfers to 1. FC Köln and SV Werder Bremen. Köln seem well stocked enough at the striker position, but Bremen’s dire need for a forward could well mean that they’re one of the potential clubs.
What other Bundesliga clubs could be close to signing Gregoritsch?
Both Hamburg teams recently received bad injury news at the center forward position. It was recently revealed that Hamburger SV will have to do without congenitally injured captain Yussuf Poulsen until March. St. Pauli striker Andreas Hountondji – declined to represent Benin at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in order to rehab several injuries – has been struggling with fresh ankle problems and is now out indefinitely with an ankle fracture.
Both St. Pauli and Hamburger SV are among Gregoritsch’s many former Bundesliga clubs. Another one of Gregoritsch’s former Bundesliga haunts, Augsburg, are also in dire need of a new center forward and may well be interested in bringing him back. Gregoritsch represented Augsburg for five seasons between 2017 and 2022. In his initial year in the Bavarian Swabian Fuggerstadt (2017/18), Gregortisch scored 13 league goals.
