Kicker reports that 1. FC Union Berlin are set to conclude a €1m sale of Czech midfielder Alex Kral to Panathinaikos. The 27-year-old – who does still maintain an estimated market value of €4m – made 10 substitute appearances for his Bundesliga outfit this season.
Alex Kral still proved influential for Union this year
Despite the fact that Kral sits on an expiring contract and counted as a player Union definitely wished to move during the current January transfer window, Kral recently played a useful role in FCU head coach Steffen Baumgart’s “Super Sub” streak. Kral most recently came off the bench against Augsburg to help his tram score a vital late equalizer.
Kral’s Bundesliga career spanned two plus seasons
Kral initially joined Schalke 04 on loan ahead of the 2022/23 season. The former Spartak Moscow man was permitted to remain in Germany via a special rule that permitted Russian professionals to terminate their contracts due to Russian aggression against neighboring Ukraine.
Kral opted to depart relegated Schalke and transfer to the capital city’s Köpenick club on a free transfer. After playing the 2023/24 campaign with Union, Kral spent last season on loan at RCD Espanyol.
Overall, Kral made 63 German top flight appearances. He was also part of the Union squad that participated in the 2023/24 Champions League.
In Union’s final UCL group stage fixture against Real Madrid, the 48-times-capped Czech international scored his lone goal for either one of his Bundesliga clubs.
