Bayern Munich attacker Luis Diaz’s hard foul on PSG’s Achraf Hakimi in Bayern’s recent Champions league away winwill cost the Colombian international three UCL matches. UEFA confirmed this information on Friday evening. Earlier today, the Bundesliga record champions were still acting on the assumption that Diaz would only miss one match.
Diaz’s hard foul on the former Borussia Dortmund professional initially earned him only a yellow card. After scenes reminiscent of PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma’s controversial foul on Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala in this summer’s Club World Cup, however, a harsher penalty came. Diaz was awarded a straight red after Hakimi was ushered off.
The three-match-suspension (assuming it goes un-appealed) means that Diaz will remain unavailable to Bayern in the Champions League for the rest of the 2025 calendar year. The former Liverpool man miss Wednesday’s showdown with Arsenal, the home game against Sporting on December 9th, and the game against Union Saint-Gilloise on January 21st after the winter break.
Kicker reports that Bayern have requested additional clarification from UEFA regarding the ruling. This likely means that the German giants are planning an appeal. Speaking at this morning’s FCB press conference, FCB head coach Vincent Kompany stated that he was told that Diaz would only be suspended for one match.
Kompany also noted that he would be resting Serge Gnabry in preparation for Diaz’s absence.
