Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß on Angelo Stiller’s omission from the German national team: “We were very surprised”

Speaking to RTL (via kicker), VfB Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß has spoken on Angelo Stiller not being called up to the German national team for the upcoming international break.

Julian Nagelsmann’s announcement of the squad for the November break omitted the Stuttgart midfielder, alongside his teammate Maximilian Mittelstädt, for the second break in a row.

Considering that Stiller is one of the better German midfielders and can be considered a pillar for the future of the team, his omission at such a crucial point in the World Cup cycle has left many at Stuttgart, including Hoeneß, puzzled:

“I don’t know why. We were very surprised. I can only speak for Angelo, he is the central player for us and a major factor in why we’re in fourth place in the Bundesliga. That in combination really puzzled us.”

When asked what the head coach will do about Stiller and Mittelstädt being ignored by Nagelsmann, he said:

“We will try to find sporting answers, even more than before.

In Stiller’s place, Leon Goretkz has been retained in the squad, while Aleksander Pavlovic, Felix Nmecha and Nadiem Amiri join Joshua Kimmich as midfield options. Leroy Sané has also been recalled to the squad, despite not setting the world alight in Turkey.

Stuttgart’s players react:

Stiller was also asked about not being called up to the national team, but he did not provide a comment following their 2-0 win against Feyenoord

While Alexander Nübel, who was called up, said:

“The surprise was great throughout the entire team,”
