Speaking to the Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung, Wolfsburg head coach Paul Simonis has addressed the defeat and the club’s poor form.
Following the loss to Holstein Kiel in the DFB Pokal, not only have Wolfsburg been eliminated from the cup, but they have also only won one of their past nine games. This has raised doubts about the future of head coach Simonis, who only joined from Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles in the summer.
On his future at the club, the Dutchman said:
“That’s a question for others. I’ll be back here at 7 a.m. tomorrow to analyse the match. We’ll see what happens after that. Losing a lot of games is never good for a team. Over the last two days, I’ve seen a squad that had a lot of energy and was enjoying themselves in the dressing room again. I’m focusing on my job – and I hope we can respond well again.”
On Tuesday evening, against the 2.Bundesliga side, Wolfsburg, were never able to get going, and at times looked second best. The 36-minute sending off of Jenson Seelt did not help.
Simonis gave a scathing review of how his team played:
“From our side, a very poor first half, there was again too little energy and very poor ball control. We ran into a lot of problems and made a lot of bad decisions. (We) played a better second half – with one man down. But we deserved to lose.”
Wolfsburg’s crisis:
The Autostadt side continues to struggle, and there are increasing doubts about Simonis.
What does not help Wolfsburg’s case is the fact that they increasingly throw money around and invest large amounts in players who simply aren’t good enough.
So far, Vinicius Souza has struggled to make his mark at the Volkswagen Arena; the same can be said for Andres Skov Olsen, who was a winter acquisition. In the past three seasons, Wolfsburg have spent over €160m and have nothing to show for it.
