Werder Bremen have announced that they have completed the loan signing of Austrian defender Maximilian Wöber from Leeds United.
The defender moves to the Weserstadion on loan with an option to buy at the end of it, in what is Bremen’s first signing under new head coach Horst Steffen.
On moving to Bremen, the 27-year-old said:
“I had very good discussions with the Werder management. I can really identify with the path they’ve outlined and I’m looking forward to the challenge. Of course, I’m also especially looking forward to meeting my three national team teammates at Werder. They’ll certainly be able to give me some advice.”
Wöber returns to the Bundesliga having spent the 2023-2024 season on loan at Borussia Mönchengladbach. The Austrian did not stay at Gladbach as the buy option in the loan agreement was too expensive for die Fohlen. Wöber’s contract at parent club Leeds United expires in 2027, meaning the buy option will likely be significantly lower for Bremen.
Following the departures of Anthony Jung (Freiburg) and Milos Veljkovic (Red Star Belgrade) on free transfers, Bremen have been lacking in options in defence. The arrival of Wöber offers a player who can play as either a centre-back or a left-back, which will be a big plus for head coach Steffen, as Jung was equally as versatile.
