Official confirmation of Lukas Kwasniok’s head coaching appointment at FC Köln has come. After the two parties came to an agreement yesterday, Kwasniok was unveiled by the newly promoted Bundesliga club on Friday morning. After Steffen Baumgart took the reins in the cathedral city in 2021, Kwasniok becomes the second head coach to move directly to Köln from SC Paderborn 07.
Köln have been on the hunt for a new head coach since short-term solution Friedhelm Funkel ruled out longer-term involvement with die Geißböcke late last month. Köln considered other candidates, but ultimately decided that Kwasniok would be worth a transfer fee paid 2. Bundesliga club. The Effzeh have already completed two major attacking signings ahead of the coming Bundesliga campaign.
“I had toyed with the idea of maybe taking a break [from football this year],” Kwasniok noted in a club-released statement. “But when [current Köln personnel boss] Thomas Kessler contacted me, I knew immediately [what to do]. It’s an amazing club and a huge opportunity. It will certainly be a great feeling to stand on the sidelines for FC for the first time in the Bundesliga.“
“He has impressively demonstrated over several years in Paderborn that he can develop teams, play attractive and successful football, and guide young players to greater heights,” Kessler added in his own statement “His style of football, his energy, and his ambition are a perfect fit for what we envision for FC in the Bundesliga. He fits very well with FC Köln.“
