Niko Kovac responds to Maximilian Beier’s prediction of a Borussia Dortmund title

Borussia Dortmund striker Maximilian Beier – after seeing a potential move to the Premier League fall apart – appears to be having a blast playing in the Bundesliga. The 22-year-old is logging plenty of minutes under BVB head coach Niko Kovac and was recently recalled to the German national team. Beier recorded his first Bundesliga goal of the new season in Saturday’s 0-2 away win at FC Heidenheim.

Beier has earned two consecutive league starts under Kovac and gotten his name on the scoresheet both times. Working behind the celebrated Serhou Guirassy on both occasions, Beier has turned in two exceptionally strong performances. Beier’s energy, pace, and highly technical work on the ball was on display in the two most recent matches.

With his pulse still euphorically pumping after scoring against Heidenheim on Saturday, Beier actually told Sky Germany that he believed Dortmund could contend for the Bundesliga title this season. BVB head coach Niko Kovac couldn’t help but smirk when asked about Beier’s prediction at the post-match press conference.

One can tell that he’s 22-years-old and,” Kovac said with a relaxed and smug grin. “I’m significantly older. With that in mind, I won’t be setting foot on that piece of thin ice. [We finished last year] 25 points behind [Champions] FC Bayern München and 13 points off [second place] Bayer Leverkusen. We need to make sure that we get off to a good start in the Champions League [on Tuesday].

Nothing really matters after three matchdays,” Kovac continued. “No [talk of] relegation. No [talk of] promotion. No [Talk of] titles. That’s his euphoria talking after he scored a goal, but I’ll bring him back down to earth.”
