Marco Friedl left ‘grasping at very few straws’ after latest Werder Bremen defeat

Werder Bremen captain Marco Friedl famously quipped that his team was “in very deep shit” following last week’s opening round Pokal loss. The young Austrian skipper’s mood obviously didn’t improve after Bremen lost their opening round Bundesliga fixture 4-1 away at Eintracht Frankfurt. The 27-year-old found few positives to take away from the performance.

There are very few straws to grasp at,” Friedl told DAZN. Not a lot has been going right either on or off the pitch in recent weeks. A lot is going awry because we have injuries and so forth. We got stuck in our own half and gifted them [Frankfurt] goals. There were numerous individual errors and we were punished mercilessly. We have to be honest, it’s going to be difficult if we don’t improve.

I [still] want to take every single last positive thing [from today,]” Friedl was nevertheless sure to add. “We’ve lost opening games before in recent years. We just have to pull ourselves out of it. We have to bring quality to the pitch, eliminate the mistakes, and simply be more dangerous up front. We are where we are and we have to find a way out of it.”
