German record champions Bayern Munich ultimately got the job done against 1. FC Köln in the DFB-Pokal last night. The current Bundesliga leaders nevertheless initially had some problems with the newly promoted club. FCB star striker Harry Kane revealed that Bayern’s British assistant coach Aaron Danks had some choice words for the team at half-time.
Danks – a Birmingham native and former Aston Villa interim head coach – maintains responsibility for set-pieces at Bayern. An early Kölner corner enabled the underdog hosts to establish confidence. Köln were able to take an early 1-0 lead off another corner in the 31st. Danks, understandably enough, was not best pleased.
“We recovered from a chaotic opening half hour and regained control before half time,” Kane told ESPN last night. “He [Danks] spoke at halftime. He gave us a bit of an ‘English talking to’. We were a bit of a mess [inside our own penalty area]. We weren’t in the right positions and weren’t following the instructions.“
Bayern would ultimately recover to earn a 1-4 away win. Kane bagged another brace. The Englishman’s second goal came off a corner. All was once again well for the German giants, who continue their European record run of 14 straight victories in competitive play this season.
Speaking in the mixed zone, FCB board-member-for-sport Max Eberl joked that Kane – who failed to get on the scoresheet for the first time this weekend against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the league – exited his personal “performance crisis“.
