German national team head coach Julian Nagelsmann will have to do without Mainz 05 midfielder in the upcoming UEFA Nations League semi-final fixture against Portugal. The German FA confirmed Amiri’s departure from camp on Saturday. Adductor problems will keep the 28-year-old sidelined through both Wednesday’s semi and next weekend’s Final or third-place playoff.
Both Amiri and his Mainz teammate Jonathan Burkardt incurred injuries in training camp this week. Burkardt – who was controversially left off Nagelsmann’s initial selection – received a call-up after all due to Angelo Stiller’s unavailability. A minor toe injury briefly sidelined the Mainz striker. The DFB sounded the all clear in Burkardt’s case.
Amiri’s injury counts as most unfortunate for the newly reinstated German international. Neither Amiri nor Burkardt performed particularly well for country in the March international break. Both players seek to gain a regular role in the team. It has confirmed that Nagelsmann does not plan to call up a replacement for Amiri.
