Benfica set to compete with Stuttgart in pursuit of PAOK’s Giannis Konstantelias

Kicker reports that Stuttgart’s problem-laden pursuit of Greek attacker Giannis Konstantelias has become more problematic. Benfica have now entered the race to sign the PAOK professional. Though the 22-year-old does wish to move to the Bundesliga, the Swabians remain €5m short of PAOK’s €20m asking price.

Kicker does note that Benfica are only “considering” acquiring Konstantelias. Moreover, Kicker correspondent George Moissidis – a journalist with close connections to the club – emphasizes that VfB administrators remain confident that they can ultimately close the deal.

The player’s own thoughts on the matter obviously cannot be divined at this point, but a move to the Primeira Liga runners-up would presumably appeal to the young talent. Benfica seek an alternative to transfer target Thiago Almada, who may be moving to Atletico Madrid for around €25m.

Such a competing interest certainly puts more pressure on Stuttgart to at least submit another bid quickly. After finalizing a pair of outgoing transfers involving Danish players, the Württemberg club does have some extra liquidity to work with.
