Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund has denied reports of a hard-issued ultimatum in the case of Dayot Upamecano’s contract extension. The 58-year-old Bundesliga executive expressed confidence that the 35-times-capped French international wishes to extend with Bayern. Freund made clear that – even though Upamecano is free to negotiate with other clubs as soon as the January transfer window opens – Bayern still maintain the upper hand.
“We remain positive about [the extension talks],” Freund – as quoted by transfermarkt.de – said in response to the rumors. “It won’t drag on indefinitely, though it doesn’t matter to us if it takes place on one particular day or another. What’s important is that it happens.
“There’s a lot being written,” Freund said of the ultimatum rumors. “The reports suggest that things are turbulent, but it’s not like that at all. The talks are proceeding well and matters aren’t nearly all that complicated either. He feels comfortable here with the team, the coach and the entire club.“
