Bayern Munich confirm back-to-back starts for keeper Jonas Urbig

Bayern Munich trainer Vincent Kompany has confirmed that Jonas Urbig will start in goal against Borussia Mönchengladbach this weekend. Urbig will receive his first Bundesliga minutes ahead of Wednesday’s DFB Pokal match against Köln. Urbig must fill in for Manuel Neuer in goal on Wednesday as the FCB captain remains out due to suspension.

Neuer drew a two-match-ban after picking up a red card in last year’s Round-of-16 Pokal defeat against Bayer Leverkusen. Urbig started between the sticks against SV Wehen Wiesbaden in Bayern’s opening round Pokal match whilst Neuer sat out the first match of his suspension.

The 22-year-old – who started ten league and four Champions League matches in place of Neuer last season – nevertheless hasn’t logged any minutes since. Kompany made clear that Urbig needed to get back into rhythm before Wednesday’s cup tie.

Urbig drew plenty of praise for his performances last season and retains his status as Neuer’s heir apparent. The former FC Köln academy man will surely have mixed feelings about facing the club who built him up on Wednesday as he remains an ardent 1. FC Köln supporter.
